What about her?
I am currently a User Experience Researcher at Facebook, a job I took after finishing my Masters in Information at University of Michigan with concentrations in Human Computer Interaction and Social Computing. Before going back to grad school, I ran Lost Art Media, a web and graphic design studio in Ithaca, NY.
I'm interested applying an understanding of cognition, social behavior and culture to the design of interfaces that inspire creativity, increase productivity and excite users. I'm also interested in the ways human interaction influences and is influenced by the web.

Interaction Design of WineLearner, an iPhone App
Sept. 2008 to 12/2008
Designed an Apple iPhone application to support learning about wine by educated adults, building on principles of activity-centered design, constructivist learning theory and perceptual learning. Click here for an overview of the project or here to see the wireframes.
CHI 2008 Student Design Competition, Second Place
Sept. 2007 to Apr. 2008
Through literature research, interviewing, modeling, ideation, and prototyping, my team developed a social network application that connects volunteers with each other and with organizations that serve the homeless, to help agencies more efficiently recruit and retain volunteers. Out of 43 entries, ours won second place, after three rounds of judging. Click here to see design elements from the project.

User Research Experience
User Experience Researcher, Facebook
June 2009 to present
I collaborate with designers, engineers and project managers to inform, inspire and influence product design. I employ a wide variety of research methods, such as ethnography, diary studies, user tests, card sorts, surveys, focus groups, interviews, discount analyses, literature review, participatory design and field studies.
User Research, Mobile Business Solutions team, Nokia Research Center Palo Alto
May 2008 to July 2008
I collaborated with a principal researcher on a qualitative behavioral study in support of software innovation. Work included comprehensive literature review, study design, extensive interviewing, data management and analysis, brainstorming, results formulation and writing for academic publication. Submitted reports and presented results verbally to my group and the Center as a whole.
Analysis of Google Maps for Mobile for SI 622 at Umich
Jan. 2008 to Apr. 2008
With a team of five students, I conducted a usability analysis of Google Maps for Mobile. Our techniques included a general transition network, personas and scenarios, competitive analysis, a user survey, heuristic evaluation, usability testing in real world settings, and vocabulary and visual analysis. See our GTN, personas and other materials here.
Contextual Inquiry for the Design & Technology Fusion Group at General Motors
Sept. 2007 to Dec. 2007
Along with a team of five students, I analyzed the GM Design and Technology Fusion Group's practices with regards to sharing and documenting ideas. We generated recommendations for digital and analog improvements using techniques such as in-depth interviewing, data modeling, an affinity diagram, brainstorming, evaluation of solutions, and delivered them to the client in a report and verbal presentation. Group members were invited back to implement suggestions in a summer internship.
Human-Computer Interaction Research
The Nearby Project, University of Michigan
Sept. 2008 to Jan. 2009
I collaborated with Professors Mark Newman and Mark Ackerman, and PhD student Ben Congleton, on a study of map annotation. We explored how map annotations can retain traces of the personality of their creators, and how collaboratively annotated maps affect the behavior of social groups. Based on the research, we planned to design and evaluate a mobile/public display system of shared annotated maps in closed communities. See the paper published in Interact 2009.
Shape Factory Study, Judy and Gary Olson's Research Lab
October 2007 to May 2008
I worked as a research assistant, collecting data on computer-supported cooperative work using an online game called Shape Factory that simulates a distributed business environment where communication and collaboration are key to success.
Eye Tracking Research, Cornell HCI Lab
Fall 2006 to May 2007
I worked on two studies of search behavior in Google, Yahoo and Ask, using eye-tracking technology. We investigated user response to refinements presentation and altered results order.
Data Retrieval and Analysis
DRAT Series, University of Michigan
Fall 2007
In a series of two courses, I learned to gather, parse, process and analyze large data sets using Perl, command-line utilities, sql queries and C and python scripts. Techniques include log analysis, graphing, data modeling, text-parsing, language processing, and clustering. Displays created in R and IBM's Many Eyes. Click here for examples of my programming for the class.
Once upon a time...
Research Project Leader, Cornell Lab of Ornithology
2001-2002
I redefined field methods and data gathering systems for the avian ecology portion of the Willow Biomass Project. Managed data from 14 field sites and prepared it for final analysis. Supervised two field assistants. Wrote interim reports for funding agencies and collaborating scientists.
